Annual Philanthropic Mission
Dear friends near and far,
Every year the Holy Orthodox Order of Saint George the Great Martyr dedicates itself to an annual philanthropic mission. This year’s charitable effort is dedicated to raising monetary support for the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (ROCOR). The Mission in Jerusalem oversees the Monastery of the Ascension of Our Lord on the Mount of Olives, the Monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Skete of Saint Chariton as well as many other holy and sacred sites.
Currently, the Mission is trying to raise money to finish major repairs to the church in Gethsemane and the bell tower at the Mount of Olives as well as restoring the 4th century Skete of Saint Chariton. In addition, the Mission is attempting to restore the Archimandrite's House at the Mount of Olives, which has an ancient 5th century mosaic floor. Completion of this restoration will provide adequate space for both the offices of the Mission as well as a place to receive visitors and pilgrims.
In addition to the above, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Mission has faced boarder closures which has severely deprived the mission and its holy sites of pilgrims – their only source of livelihood. This lack of income due to the Pandemic has taken a serious and unfortunate toll on the many monks and nuns who make up the vast mission. The monastics are malnourished, food rations have been cut, they have no money for health insurance, they are living in cold unfit conditions (with mold in their cells and drywall as a roof) and they need the very basic of necessities that we in our daily lives take for granted (food, clean water, toiletries, bed linens, blankets, eyeglasses, medication, and heat).
This philanthropic endeavor of the Order is in keeping with its goals and objectives to organize, promote, aid, and engage in charitable, humanitarian, educational, medical and chivalric activities, particularly by: aiding the poor, the sick, the needy, the aged, the infirm, the maimed, the mentally ill, the imprisoned and the socially disadvantaged; assisting in the maintenance of holy places including, but not limited to, buildings, monasteries, seminaries, shrines, churches, and cathedrals of the Orthodox Faith; and establishing and promoting the works of hospitals, medical centers, orphanages, schools and other bona fide Orthodox institutions and/or organizations.
We cordially invite you to join us in helping in this worthy cause as we continue in our mission of assistance and advocacy for Orthodox Christians in need and under persecution. Please keep these monastics in your prayers as they pray not only for peace but for the salvation of the whole human race in the most Holy, Sacred and Ancient City of Jerusalem.
Donations can be made through the donate button (bottom right) on this website. Please write in the description/purpose of your donation as being: “the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem” so that we can appropriately allocate it to this urgent cause.
